DLC Coating
What is DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) Coating?
A hard carbon, thin film coating that solves wear and friction problems in high performance mechanical components. It has become the coating of choice for precision components where durability and low friction are essential to success. Properties of DLC are High Hardness • Low Friction • High Adhesion • High Conformance To Substrates
Why do I want it?
The low friction part helps make your fork and shock action smoother and more predictable by reducing stiction.
The hardness of the coating helps keep nicks and scratches to a minimum. Nicks and scratches carry dirt into your suspension components. Dirt in your oil causes premature seal and bushing failures.
What about that Gold coating?
TiN (Titanium Nitride) is another coating used on suspension components. It is a little slicker than DLC but not near as hard. On a dirt bike you can expect a much greater life out of DLC than TiN. We can get your suspension TiN coated but we highly recommend DLC.
How do I get it?
The coating must be applied to brand new components only. We stock coated fork tubes and shock shafts for most current off road models. To install the tube we charge for a fork or shock service and take your unused fork tubes or shock shaft as a trade for the new coated ones. This saves you the down time of waiting for the tubes to come back from the coater.
How Much?
If your fork tubes or shock shaft are in unused condition it is $400 per fork leg and $300 per shock shaft. Add to this the cost of a regular fork or Shock service. If your tubes are used the price for the new tubes will vary by brand.
Custom Suspension Setup
This is where Thom, Andre`, and the rest of the crew shine. They have done work for all levels of riders. Pro riders like Steve Hatch praise their work. In the April issue of Dirt Bike they loved Thom’s test bike, and at the 07 MX Des Nations Dirt Rider couldn’t get enough of the Coppersmith test mule. Saying things like
“The bike was extremely controllable-no bucking or loose feeling at all, just a “suction” to the track with no jarring. ”
and
“This fork eats braking chop for breakfast. And breakfast is the most important meal of the day “.
To get a bike’s suspension working correctly is both an art and a science. The Coppersmith technicians understand both. Service varies from getting a bike setup with the correct spring rates, and sag, to full on custom valving and more. Please call and talk with Thom about what level of service you need and he will be happy to help you.
